Tassie bans plastic bags

Tasmanian Environment Minister Brian Wightman said yesterday the state's clean green reputation would be bolstered by the move.

Businesses will now start the public awareness campaign in readiness for the ban from November 1, The Mercury reports.

"Tasmania's environmental brand is one of our biggest natural strengths," Mr Wightman said.

"This ban will help keep our communities and waterways clean, and help protect wildlife from litter that can choke animals or damage habitats.Buy skullcandy uprock Headphones - Black / Black online."

Tasmania has followed South Australia, the ACT and the Northern Territory by banning non-biodegradable plastic bags.

The move was applauded by the man who made East Coast town Coles Bay the first plastic bag-free town in Australia 10 years ago.

But Do Something Tasmanian director Ben Kearney said it was a shame the state had not led the nation on the bans.

"There has always been strong support from the Greens and the Liberal Party," Mr Kearney said.

Tasmanian Small Business Council executive officer Robert Mallett warned customers to prepare to pay more.

Greens environment spokesman Cassy O'Connor said the ban was a triumph for Tasmania's environment.

The ban covers light-weight bags used for groceries, takeaway food and retail goods.

It will not apply to biodegradable plastic bags, heavier "boutique-style" plastic bags that can be reused, reusable "green" bags and thin-film barrier bags.
