Selectmen opt for colored trash bags

Trash bags may be getting a bold new color scheme if selectmen get their way.

On Monday night, selectmen invited Board of Health Chairman Eileen Hurley and Sharon Kishida, the Regional Solid Waste and Recycling coordinator, to participate in a waste disposal discussion that touched on a new Pay As You Throw (PAYT) initiative and ideas to provide a Hazardous Waste Day.

Selectmen have been concerned for some time about the lack of accountability of the trash removal program, specifically citing the misuse of stickers on trash bags. They hope to switch from a sticker system to a colored trash bag system that they believe will expedite pickup and increase the accuracy of the haulers. Kishida outlined the parameters of a new Department of Environmental Protection-sponsored PAYT grant available to state cities and towns if certain requirements are met. Selectmen were also concerned that Merrimac had opted out of participating with Newburyport in a Hazardous Waste Pick-up Day last September. Hurley said that the reason was that she could not find adequate volunteers to help out as Newburyport required for the participation.

It was decided that Merrimac residents would be offered a schedule of possible days for hazardous waste disposal in neighboring towns. Kishida will supply this list and it will be posted on the town website and Cable network.

In other business, resident Jeanne Daneau will be constructing a new website for the Merrimac cable TV station. The new website will make the station eligible for nonprofit status and will also streamline the search for programming schedules.
