Albertville students will go barefoot to help shoeless

Millwood, a 14-year-old freshman, last November began working on a program to raise money to purchase shoes for local children who don’t have them. She didn’t go public with her idea until about a month ago, but the results still have been impressive.

A big fan of Tom’s Wear, Millwood had hoped to get that company to participate, but her program didn’t meet its criteria.

So, she had T-shirts designed that were sold for $10 each, with about $2 profit from each going toward the purchase of shoes. Most of the hardest work is completed, but Millwood still has to find a brand of shoes, preferably a sneaker. The thought of going barefoot may not be all that appealing to many.

“Kids think going barefoot is so gross,” Millwood said. “But kids are going barefoot every day. You’ve got to put the children first.”

Millwood admitted it has been a struggle at times, especially so on the eve of the shoeless day at school.

“It’s been stressful today,” she said Monday, “but I’m excited for tomorrow. I’m looking forward to going barefoot. It will open eyes so we know how privileged we are to have shoes.

Millwood said she’s appreciative of the support she’s received, adding, “I know the children are going to appreciate this more than anything.”
