They’re back, but platform shoes not made for walking

They’re the ultimate platform for fashion — especially for the height-challenged — which might explain the return of the eye-catching, towering shoe to the world of style. 

Hugely popular in the late 1960s and 1970s, platform shoes went through a bit of an image problem in the decades that followed, being more closely associated with aging glam rockers and drag queens for quite a few rough fashion years. 

But more recently, the platform has returned with a vengeance, in all manner of colours and styles from everyday to dressy. 

There are casual, chunky platform wedges from Fly London and pretty, high-heeled, platform sandals that mix animal prints with bold colours from Ramon Tenza. There are hidden platforms, wooden platforms and flexible platforms, all catering to our love of both fashion and height, says Carole Noland, owner of Lord’s shoes.

“I love going downtown at night and seeing all the girls in their platforms. They can’t walk in them at all but they’re looking good,” she says. 

“You’re buying them as fashion, and often to be taller … They can increase your height by four to five inches, but it’s not like wearing a five-inch heel. The pitch, or steepness, of the shoe, is much less in a platform shoe because both the sole and heel are raised. 

Noland says the technology of the platform shoe has evolved to make some of them more comfortable. Flexible platforms, for example, bend in the middle and are much easier to walk in. Others, particularly more expensive ones, are built on a rock sole that turns up a bit at the toe. “When you walk, your foot has the ability to roll in the platform, whereas a cheaper one is cut real square. That’s why you see girls walking like they have bricks under their feet.” 

Still, most platforms, particularly the really high ones, aren’t built for walking. “Most fashion companies that do something like a platform are not that interested in comfort,” she says.
