‘Bags of Hope’ event will raise money to operate shelter for women

There aren’t many events where “purse snatchers” would be welcome, but organizers of a charity bag auction this week are hoping they pack the place.

Bags of all kinds—purses, totes, golf bags and clutches—will be auctioned off at the Bags of Hope event Thursday at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Fredericksburg.

Included in the auction are brand-name bags such as Coach, Kate Spade, Brighton, Vera Bradley and Dooney & Bourke, as well as two purses donated by actress Sally Struthers,Instead, businesses can offer thicker plastic bags or handled paper bags. The event, which features live and silent auctions, food, drinks and a raffle, begins at 6 p.m.

Hope House houses 13 families in three sites around the city and supports transitioning families for six months after they leave the facilities.

The program recently celebrated its 25th anniversary of service in the area.

Crittenden said that Hope House is always in need of paper towels, trash bags, toilet paper, cleaning supplies and hand soap, as well as financial support.

“It is a great opportunity to find a designer bag at a reduced price, but it’s also an opportunity to give back,” Crittenden said about the event.
