You can imagine the surprise and pleasure when he and my mother opened the boxcar one day and saw that all the feed bags were made of printed, often flowered, cloth. Prior to this time, the feed was always shipped in burlap bags.

Mother soon had a side business of her own reselling the feed bags, since a lot of my father's customers were Amish and did not use the "fancy" bags.

My job was to turn the bags inside out, shake out the feed and open the bag strings, which were always difficult to get started. Mother would wash them and stack them in piles of prints that matched.
