Group bags more than 20,000 pounds of green beans to feed hungry in North Alabama
A group of volunteers gathered in the parking lot of the U.S. Space and Rocket Center this morning to bag and sort more than 20,000 pounds of green beans that will feed the hungry at food banks throughout North Alabama.
Food Bank of North Alabama partnered with the Society of St. Andrew for the green bean drop, which began at 7 a.m. and lasted three hours.

Keen said it was her understanding that the beans, which were picked yesterday, would have ended up in a dump had they not contacted the farmer.
She said she was pleased and thankful that a group of nearly 35 people would show up at 7 a.m. to help feed the hungry.

One of the people cutting bags was Kenny Anderson, Director of Multicultural Affairs for the City of Huntsville.
"These are quality of life issues," Anderson said. "To have a community of individuals come together and say that we support this kind of initiative and say we care is valuable."
Anderson said he was part of a bigger leadership group from the City of Huntsville that was set to arrive later.
