In this program, fresh veggies are the perfect prescription
The sack of kale Luz Maria Flores held in her arms Thursday afternoon was just what the doctor ordered.
Its nutrient-laden goodness, the product of a unique combination of urban farming and community health care called the Fresh Produce Prescription Program, helps her keep diabetes at bay and makes her whole family strong. New Haven Farms runs the program.
“I felt like my life was important to save,” Flores said. Her 13-year-old daughter, Daisy, translated her mom’s words from Spanish to English. “The vegetables are good for our life and our bodies.”
